It’s almost been a year since that life-changing day in July when Kevin had his accident. What a ride it’s been. We couldn’t have made it this far without all the support from family, friends and good people that seemingly come out of the woodwork to offer their help just when we need it. Our entire family can’t thank you enough.
Kevin has made tremendous medical progress since the accident and is now working hard at home to stay fit and healthy for that glorious day when he regains consciousness. We have been blessed with some of the best doctors, nurses and therapists. They are like family. We are now to a point where our home is a functional/loving/caring environment for Kevin to continue to recover while the rest of the family goes on with our “normal” lives. We thank God to have come this far since many of those suffering from traumatic brain injury are not able to return to the familiar surroundings of home.
As many of you know, there is no FDA approved treatment for disorders of consciousness. There are treatments that are approved for other brain related illnesses that are tried with varying degrees of success, but all these treatments are experimental. While we are blessed to have Kevin in our daily lives we continue to look for ways to help Kevin regain consciousness. Through a series of coincidences (we have come to learn that is how God works) we have been introduced to the International Brain Research Foundation – IBRF. Most of their work has been done with soldiers suffering brain injury from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Quoting from a March article in Popular Science (see attached PDF)
“They (the IBRF) wake up 84 percent of their patients from a minimally conscious or vegetative state. The nationwide rate is less than 7 percent.”
Kevin and our family are now in the IBRF camp looking for answers through research that do not currently exist in the medical community.
Many of you have offered to help. This has been a humbling experience and now we could really use your help to raise funds for the IBRF on Kevin’s behalf. IBRF is a sanctioned 501 (c)(3) charitable organization and donations are tax deductible. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for the IBRF. Any donation no matter how small or large is greatly appreciated. These funds will help Kevin directly as a participant in one of the few program in existence designed to help individuals in Kevin’s condition. On Saturday September 11th, we will be hosting a fundraiser at our home from 7- 10pm. You are cordially invited to attend. Food, drink and music will be provided. A representative of the IBRF will join us to give an update on their progress towards finding treatments for brain injury and disorders of consciousness. If you are planning to attend the fundraiser we are asking for a donation of $250 per person.
